STEM Careers Workshop

On Friday 7 March - in celebration of International Women's Day and the start of British Science Week - Year 8 and 9 girls had the great opportunity of listening to Christina Astin, previously a physics teacher who is now involved in coaching and inspiring more people into STEM careers.

The girls learnt about the gaps between the number of men and women taking STEM A-levels, studying STEM subjects at university and going into STEM careers. Christina talked about the difference in girls' and boys' brains, as well as the part nurture plays in girls seeing STEM as more of a male-oriented field e.g. the differences in children's toys.

The girls took part in a personality quiz and found out what type of careers suited their personalities from this. Finally, they heard from some inspirational people in STEM careers.

The students were fully engaged throughout and left inspired to look further into STEM careers that had previously not really considered.
