DNA Workshops with University of Southampton

On Tuesday 28 January, a group of Year 7 and 8 students had the amazing opportunity of taking part in a DNA workshop with two PhD students from the University of Southampton. Students learnt what DNA is, where we find it in organisms and that we share 60% of our DNA with a strawberry!
They then completed their own DNA extraction from a strawberry, all successfully isolating the DNA from the strawberry so they could look at it. Students really engaged with the workshop and came out with some great results. Well done to them all!
Huge thanks to Kaitlin and Claudia, the PhD students who led the workshops. This opportunity was offered as a part of the university's outreach programme to inspire more young people into further STEM-based studies and careers.
